*Presenters must register and pay to attend the preconference at the regular preconference fee. (There will be a special Sunday/Monday rate for those who would like to stay for the first day of the main users conference)
*Abstracts must be submitted by June 30, 2011

LiDAR Data for RI

News! The Northeast LiDAR Consortium, led by Maine Office of GIS, submitted a 'LiDAR for the Northeast' proposal to USGS through an ARRA Funding Opportunity. RIGIS just got word that this project is moving forward to receive full funding. Acquisition is going to be attempted during the fall of 2010 and will include the entire state. This will be a great dataset.

The Call for Presentations for the Northeast Arc Users Group has arrived! November 7 - 10 in Newport, RI. Subject areas include Climate Change, Natural Resources, and others. Abstracts due June 1, 2010. Consider submitting a poster as well.  For a complete description, check out the web site

Rhode Island Bathymetry

There is some very nice bathymetry data for lower Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound available as a map service from URI. Here's a little video to show you how to use it in your ArcMap projects.  You can view it here

Exhibit of Historic Maps

The John Carter Brown Library has just opened a new exhibition "A Conversation with Maps".  It has many examples of historic maps created during the period of European expansion.  If you can't make it to the Library for a visit, the exhibit is also offered on-line here.

netCDF Files

If you utilize netCDF files in ArcGIS, you'll know that at times they can be a bit difficult to deal with.  I found a free utility called Panoply (http://www.giss.nasa.gov/tools/panoply/) which will allow you to explore a netCDF file before bringing it into ArcMap.  Panoply will enable you to review the variables and time dimensions that are contained within the netCDF file and perhaps give you a better sense of what you are seeing when you open the netCDF file and work with it in ArcMap.

RIGIS User Group Meeting

After a long hiatus, the RIGIS Executive Committee has decided to bring back these User Group Meetings in order to provide a mechanism for GIS users across the state to share their work and ideas, and network with one another.

The next meeting will be held on February 2, 2010 from 1pm to 4pm at Bryant University. More details about speakers / topics coming soon.
